Distractions are everywhere, infiltrating our daily routines and often derailing our focus. From the constant notifications on our smartphones to the myriad of social media platforms vying for our attention, it can feel like we are perpetually surrounded by noise. Living with intention has become more crucial than ever.
Intention shapes our thoughts, actions, and ultimately, our lives profoundly. When you consciously choose to live with purpose, you clarify your goals and create a roadmap for achieving them. This clarity lets you identify what is genuinely important to you, distinguishing between fleeting desires and long-term aspirations. By setting clear intentions, you are better equipped to align your daily actions with those goals, transforming your routine into a series of meaningful steps that propel you toward your desired outcomes.

Understanding Intention

Intention refers to the motivation behind our actions, serving as a guiding force that shapes our behavior and choices, ultimately shaping our lives. It encompasses the underlying reasons and purposes that drive us to engage in various activities, whether simple daily tasks or significant life decisions.
Intention is deeply rooted in our values, beliefs, and desires, collectively influencing how we navigate the world around us. When we act with intention, we are not merely reacting to external circumstances or following routines but making conscious decisions that reflect our true selves and aspirations.
For example, I am a Christian, and I approach each day with the intention of living a biblical life as described in the Bible. Yes, sometimes I fail, but my faith is the force behind my intentions and shapes the meaning and purpose of my interactions, actions, and daily life.
An intentional approach to decision-making allows us to align our actions with our core beliefs, leading to a greater sense of fulfillment and authenticity in our lives.
Living intentionally often involves setting clear goals and identifying the steps necessary to reach them, which can lead to a more purposeful and directed life.
In contrast, when we lack intention, our actions may become erratic or aimless, potentially resulting in feelings of dissatisfaction or disconnection from our true selves. In various aspects of life, such as relationships, career choices, and personal development, the role of intention becomes even more pronounced.
For instance, acting with intention in relationships can foster deeper connections, as we consciously choose to communicate openly and with support.
In our careers, setting intentions can guide our professional paths, helping us pursue opportunities that resonate with our values and long-term goals. Most of us have had, or still have, jobs that do not suit us. We go to work out of responsibility, not passion. Understanding our values and learning how to live with intention based on those values may help us to find work we feel passionate about doing.
In personal development, cultivating a mindset of intention encourages us to engage in practices that promote mental, emotional, and physical well-being. When we live by our values we feel content. Living with intention helps us focus on activities and choices that improve our overall health and lives.
In faith, living intentionally guides our daily lives, including our daily decisions, responding to the world, and communicating with others. My faith guides the way I speak, behave, and love those around me.
Clarifying Your Values

While living with intention may sound complicated, it is pretty simple. Determining and clarifying your values and goals is the most challenging thing about living intentionally.
To live intentionally, the first step is to illuminate your core values. This foundational process involves deep self-reflection and an honest examination of what truly matters to you. What do you stand for? This question catalyzes understanding your beliefs, principles, and the ethical standards that guide your decisions and actions. It is essential to recognize that your values are not merely abstract concepts; they are the driving forces that shape your identity and influence your interactions with the world around you.
What holds significance in your life? This inquiry invites you to explore the various aspects of your existence that bring you joy, fulfillment, and a sense of purpose. Are these values centered around family and relationships, faith, personal growth, creativity, or a commitment to social issues? Identifying these elements helps to clarify your priorities, allowing you to align your daily choices with your overarching goals and aspirations.
By taking the time to articulate your core values, you lay the groundwork for a life that is not only meaningful but also authentic to who you are at your very core.
Take time to reflect on the aspects of life that resonate with you. There are many ways to do so. Consider the following methods and tips:
Be Honest with Yourself: When reflecting on your life values and goals, eliminate the noise of what you thought were your life goals and values. We often get "stuck" believing our life goals and values are exactly what our parents or friends may have taught us. To truly live an intentional life, you must reflect honestly upon your values, ambitions, and goals and let these, not those of others, guide your purpose in life.

Write It Down: Create a list of values, such as family, health, faith, creativity, or adventure. What brings you joy? What inspires you? Reflect on what will make your life the life you have always pictured and dreamed of.
Prioritize: Identify which values are non-negotiable and prioritize them. This is very important because as we begin reflecting and writing down our goals and values, we may end up with a huge, overwhelming list. Focusing on the most critical values first is essential, then sprinkle in the less important goals as we progress.
Reflect Regularly: Revisit your values periodically. Life evolves, and so can your values. People change, ideas change, and goals change. Do not be afraid to reassess your original goals and make changes where necessary.

Intentional living is living according to your values. By aligning your daily actions with these values, you create a pathway toward living a life filled with purpose and joy.
Setting Clear Intentions
Once your values are clear, the next step is to set intentions that align with them. Intentions differ from goals in that they focus more on the direction you want your life to take. We all have goals, but we must consider how we intend to reach those goals. That is the intention. It is the plan of action for our goals. For example, a goal may be to improve your health. An intention is "I intend to eat healthier". Intentions attach a "how" to your goals.
Start by asking yourself questions such as:
What do I want to bring into my life?
What do I feel is lacking in my life?
What do I find myself wishing for?
Please write down your intentions, keeping them concise yet meaningful. For example:
"I intend to cultivate gratitude in my daily life."
"I intend to allocate time for self-care every week."
"I intend to exercise more each week."
"I intend to care more for my spiritual health."
Define the Specifics: Be specific about your intentions, as specificity promotes clarity and focus. This is where you reflect on how you will meet your goals and intentions.
Intention: "I intend to cultivate gratitude in my daily life."
Specifics: "I will practice gratitude each night by writing down three things I am grateful for each day."
Intention: "I intend to allocate time for self-care every week."
Specifics: "I will take a long, relaxing bath and utilize home spa treatments once a week."
Intention: "I intend to exercise more each week."
Specifics: "I will wake up early on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and do 30 minutes of exercise."
Creating a Daily Practice
Living intentionally requires consistent practice. By integrating intentional moments into your daily routine, you start to weave your values and intentions into the fabric of your life.
Consider the following practices:
Morning Rituals: Begin your day with a mindful ritual that includes setting your intentions for completing your goals this day. This can be through meditation, writing in your journal, or simply a moment of reflection.
Reflection: At the end of each day, reflect on what you are grateful for. This practice grounds you and enhances your sense of purpose.
Mindfulness Meditation: Pause throughout the day to engage in mindfulness. Focusing on your breath can bring you back to the present and clarify your intentions.
Daily practices will help establish a strong foundation for intentional living. These practices can be as simple as jotting down your goals and how you will reach them while eating breakfast or refocusing on goals through intentional moments throughout your day.

Overcoming Obstacles
Living with intention doesn't mean everything goes smoothly; challenges will arise. The key is to confront these obstacles with resilience.
Here are strategies to stay aligned with your intentions during tough times:
Embrace Flexibility: Understand that your plans may need to adapt. Stay open to change and adjust your intentions as needed while retaining your core values. For example, if you'd intentionally planned to work out Monday, Wednesday, and Friday but something happens on Wednesday preventing you from working out, stay flexible and schedule your workout for another day, such as Thursday or over the weekend.
Seek Support: Surround yourself with positive influences. Friends or groups that share similar values can provide encouragement during challenging moments. I often rely on my husband to keep me motivated and accountable. When I feel like giving up on something he knows is important, he will encourage me and remind me why I felt that particular thing was important for my life. We all need those kinds of friends! So, seek guidance and support from those who positively influence your life.
