Insulin is a crucial hormone produced by the pancreas that plays a vital role in regulating blood sugar levels by facilitating the entry of glucose into the body's cells, which are utilized for energy.


When the insulin response is impaired, either due to inadequate production or cellular resistance, glucose fails to enter the cells, accumulating sugar in the bloodstream effectively. This condition is known as hyperglycemia, which can result in elevated blood sugar levels that persist over time.


One of the main reasons for this website was my journey and struggle to stay healthy once diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. While doctors were quick to put me on traditional medications, I found I was not receiving enough information or support on how to manage my type 2 diabetes through holistic means. Of course, as I stress throughout my website, the first step to managing diabetes is to speak with your doctor. There may be a need for traditional medicine, including insulin, which is extremely important in managing diabetes when needed. A balanced diet is essential in Type 2 Diabetes management. Foods rich in fiber, low in simple sugars, and packed with nutrients can stabilize blood sugar levels effectively. Some dietary strategies to consider include:


  • Incorporate whole grains: Switching to whole grain bread, brown rice, and oatmeal, as they have a lower glycemic index, can keep blood sugar levels steady.


  • Eat a Variety of Vegetables: Fill your plate with colorful vegetables, such as leafy greens, broccoli, and bell peppers, which provide essential nutrients and fiber.


  • Include lean proteins: Favor fish, chicken, turkey, beans, and legumes over fatty cuts of meat. Protein helps you feel full longer, preventing overeating.


  • Watch Portion Size: Understand serving sizes and control portions to manage calorie intake. Studies show that reducing portion sizes can lead to a lower intake of carbohydrates, positively affecting blood sugar levels.

Having Type 2 Diabetes does not mean that you can never have sugar, bread, or pasta again. It simply means you may need to limit these foods and substitute healthier options as often as possible.


For example, try a couple of squares of dark chocolate or an apple instead of a candy bar. If you absolutely must have that candy bar, then have it, but practice portion control and only have a few squares of the bar rather than the entire bar. Save the rest for another day.


It takes practice, but once you make portion control a daily habit, it will be key in managing your diabetes.


If possible, speak with a Registered Dietician who will provide the building blocks you need to manage your type 2 diabetes.


If you cannot talk to a dietician, do not become discouraged. There are vast amounts of information about type 2 diabetes to be found online.

Regular exercise is vital for managing type 2 diabetes. It enhances insulin sensitivity, lowers blood sugar levels, and improves overall health. Before beginning any new dietary or physical activity changes, it is essential to speak with your doctor.


Physical activity is necessary for good health, but there may be some risks to consider when you are a type 2 diabetic. "To exercise safely, some people with diabetes need to track their blood sugar before, during and after physical activity. This shows how the body responds to exercise. And it can help prevent blood sugar swings that could be dangerous." (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2024).

Ideas to Help You Become More Physically Active:

This can be achieved by scheduling specific times for exercise, such as going for a brisk walk in the morning or engaging in a fitness class after work.


Additionally, consider using stairs rather than the elevator, parking further away from your destination, standing up during work when possible, and stretching or exercising at your desk throughout the day.


2. Finding Activities You Enjoy: It’s crucial to engage in physical activities that you find enjoyable. This could mean exploring various sports, joining a dance class, or participating in group fitness sessions.


When you enjoy what you do, you are driven to stick with it and make it a regular part of your lifestyle. Experiment with different activities until you find one or more that you love and will keep you motivated.


3. Setting Realistic Goals: Setting achievable and measurable goals can significantly enhance your commitment to staying active. Start by defining what you want to accomplish, whether walking a certain number of steps daily, completing a specific workout routine several times a week or training for a local 5K run.

You will want to start by ensuring your hands are clean and dry to avoid contamination and inaccurate readings.


Follow the instructions provided with your glucose meter, which typically involves inserting a test strip into the meter, pricking the side of your fingertip with a lancet to obtain a small drop of blood, and then touching the drop of blood to the test strip. The meter will then display your blood glucose level within seconds.

It is vital to keep a log of your readings, noting the time of day and any relevant circumstances, such as meals, exercise, or medication taken, as these factors can influence your glucose levels. Most glucose monitors will keep these logs for you automatically, and many have the option to add notes so you can better record any notes you feel are essential.


Always consult your healthcare professional regarding your target glucose levels and the testing frequency appropriate for your health needs. This proactive approach to managing blood glucose levels can significantly improve overall health and well-being.


Building a close relationship with your healthcare team is crucial. They can assist in interpreting your readings and adjusting your management plan as needed.


Managing Stress and Mental Well-being


Living with type 2 diabetes can create stress that impacts blood sugar levels. Thus, addressing mental health is a crucial aspect of diabetes management. Here are some helpful strategies:


Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness can significantly enhance your well-being and help alleviate stress.


One effective method is meditation, which involves focusing your mind and eliminating distractions to achieve a state of mental clarity and emotional calmness. There are various forms of meditation, such as guided meditation, where an instructor leads you through the process, or mindfulness meditation, which encourages you to observe your thoughts and feelings without judgment.


Yoga: Another beneficial practice is yoga, a holistic approach that combines physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation.


Yoga improves flexibility and strength and promotes relaxation and mental clarity. Chair Yoga is an excellent way for those with mobility issues or joint pain to practice yoga.
